Local Wildlife
You don’t even need to go searching for some of our wildlife, it is right here soaring above your head!
Once on the verge of extinction, the Red Kite is a success story for conservation here in Wales. One of the stations that was set up is just outside of Aberystwyth, Bwlch Nant Yr Arian, which you can visit As the success story has continued, the kites have gone off to find their own territories, and we are lucky enough to have a breeding pair here – you can see their nesting tree from all of the pods! We never get tired of seeing them, and say hello to them each day as they hover above us!
We also have a breeding pair of Buzzards, whose nesting tree is only about 30m from the Kites’ – there can be some exciting aerial ‘discussions’ in the Spring and Summer!
What else can you see here on site?
Sparrowhawks and occasionally a Goshawk – but we cannot guarantee you will see them, they visit us less frequently.
Barn owls nest in the trees below the glamping meadow, you are more likely to hear them than see them, but it is such a treat when you do spot them!
Wander around the hedgerows and in the long grass and you will see everything from Bluetits, Great Tits, Robins, Nuthatch, Dunnet, – the spring Dawn Chorus is raucous at times!
Our foxes are secretive beauties, so again you will often hear them yipping at night, but very rarely see them – even though you know they are very close! Unlike their urban cousins, these guys are truly wild and wary of humans
Hedgehogs are often seen at the other end of the property (near the stables) but last year we spotted one in the Glamping site, so hopefully we have a new family that has moved in – or maybe the youngsters from the family at the stables.
Mini-beasts – lots of them!!
Butterflies, bees, dragon flies, moths, crickets and lots more. As we try and leave as much natural habitat as possible (and constantly trying to provide more) you won’t have to go far to see something – it is a great thing to get the children involved in, and we have Scavenger Hunt activity sheets for anyone to use.
Toads and frogs – depending on the time of year, you can often find them along the underside of the hedge.
Rabbits are everywhere, and we have even seen Polecats twice!
If you are a keen photographer, then don’t forget to bring your kit!
Wildlife Elsewhere
The best place to see some amazing wildlife is the coast – Cardigan Bay is home to the largest amount of Bottlenose Dolphins in the UK, you can also see Porpoises and Grey Seals – they can all be seen from the shore (we can send you to the best places, but cannot guarantee that they will be there when you are!) or you can go out on one of the boat trips too. There is something awe – inspiring when you see these graceful, playful creatures.
If you like snorkelling, it is truly amazing what you can see – the water might be a little colder than the places you would usually think about snorkelling in, but it is no less spectacular!
